Ironically enough, three months after Apple Music launch, all the popular outlets are reminding users to cancel the automatic subscription. Although, according to Gizmodo, 48% users already waved a farewell to the new service in the middle of free trial.
What type of crime has the company committed to deserve such treatment and after all, what was all the buzz around Apple Radio – Beats One?
Nothing new under the sun
In their own words, Beats One is a long-awaited “global 24/7 online radio”. But wait, isn’t it the same description that fits all the other market players?
Life is hard for the new kid on the block – iOS-only Apple Radio is competing with such cross-platform streaming services as Spotify, Google Play Music, Rdio and Tidal. However, taking into consideration the price of subscription, the main goal is obviously Spotify Premium user audience.
Little too complicated, little too raw
f the company wants Spotify users to switch, there must be something very special about Apple Music, something worth changing the habit of music lovers all over the world.
“Sometimes you just want to hit a button and listen to the radio” – the guided tour says, but simplicity of the service is greatly exaggerated – it will take you at least 4 clicks to actually start hearing live broadcast.
Sadly, but low usability is nothing in comparison with the numerous bugs that Apple Music update brings.
Wait, there’s more for a true audiophile to suffer – Apple streams music at 256 Kbps. Why? It sounds so much better at 320 Kbps! “Lower bitrate means less Internet data consumption” – might have been an excuse if we didn’t live in the world where smartphone owners switch to unlimited data plans, or at least can choose the bitrate accordingly – as suggested by popular online radio stations.
So who actually uses Apple Music and listens to Beats One?
According to the newest MusicWatch research, one quarter of iOS users in the U.S. are not even aware of the service, while the number of supporters is comparatively modest so far: 18% of iTunes Radio users, 11% of Spotify Free and 6% of Pandora listeners have switched to Apple Music.
Beats One statistics looks even more sad – it is used by one third of Apple Music streamers only.
Whether people are overwhelmed with a far-from-friendly interface, price, sound quality or technical issues – the majority simply doesn’t see any good reason to leave their favorite streaming service. Supported by the most loyal fans, Apple Radio seems to be just another expensive toy aimed to tie users deeper into the Apple ecosystem.
